How many tile leveling clips do you need per square metre?
There is no single correct figure for clips per square metre, because the number depends on tile size and on how many clips the installer places along each edge. Rather than quote an average, this guide shows the calculation so you can produce a figure for your own tile formats.
The calculation
Work out the area of one tile in square metres, then decide how many clips that tile needs. Clips per square metre is simply the clips per tile divided by the area of a tile.
Clips per m² = clips per tile ÷ (tile length in m × tile width in m).
Clips per tile is an installation decision, not a product property. Installers commonly place clips along each shared edge and add more on long edges of large-format tile, where lippage is most visible.

What to add on top of the calculation
- Cut tiles and perimeter rows change the pattern, so edges against a wall usually need fewer clips.
- Some clips are damaged or misplaced on site, so buyers normally order a margin above the calculated figure.
- Wedges are reusable and recovered after the clips are removed, so wedge quantities are driven by how many clips are set at one time, not by the total area.
- Pliers are a tool, not a consumable — one or two per crew is typical.
